We're not entirely sure what's going on after looking at some preview photos that SF's Ever Gold Gallery emailed over, but their second residency program looks interesting as SFAI graduate Owen Takabayashi prepares for the opening on Sept 1st. The residency continues for 3 weeks with a closing reception set for Sept 24th. Interview with Owen Takabayashi by Gregory Ito.
For Takabayashi’s new body of work and site-specific installation he will be appropriating the utility of found, mass-produced objects.

For people who are unfamiliar with your work, briefly describe the concepts behind your work, and your primary mediums in your practice?
The concept of economy plays a large part in my practice. I usually paint, draw, and sculpt. A portion of my materials are often reclaimed objects which I then reappropriate to investigate themes in my practice
Where are you originally from, and how long have you been living and working in San Francisco?
Southern California, suburbs, pretty close to the beach man. I’ve been living up here for about seven years now. One year out in Berkeley, and about six years out here.
How does the Bay Area play a role in your artistic practice?
I think this is a great place for artist in the sense that you can be exposed to so many great people and things and ideas. It’s pretty free and civil up here, I think?
This show is your third solo show at Ever Gold Gallery. What can we expect from this show?
Well I hope to show works with sort of a native, primitive, end of summer sorta feel. Simple abstractions.
How has your experience been working in the Ever Gold Gallery as your studio?
Its great to have all the space I wish I had more time too. It’s a little noisier down here in the evening hours. Thank you for the opportunity.
You are known as a collector of objects. What is the importance of collecting in your practice?
I guess I collect things that fascinate me or that I want to contemplate a little more, I have been working on picking up less stuff off the street. I guess I sometimes equate collecting with a sort of currency/ economy. It’s a bad habit that I got into, but around my neighborhood the population is so transitory that sometimes, whole apartments are just thrown out.
You graduated from SFAI as a painter. How has your practice expanded since then?
I like sculpture and the practicality of design. I hope to expand into stuff that is practical and functional. Paintings, drawings and sculpture function in a different way.
The book: Exile and the Kingdom, by Albert Camus, is a recurring theme in your work and the primary thread in this show. Please tell us more about the role of this book in your artwork.
I like to read. I guess it’s a study for trying new works. Picturing things from a book and trying to translate them into images. I was reading this book when you approached me for the show. Some of the scenes in the book were really beautiful so I thought I’d try to make art that aspired to the words. And the themes too. Camus was an absurdist. I guess the themes of the collected stories in that book are parables of the weird paradox of being human. What do we do? Personally I think I get stuck in inaction when it comes to life and art. But death pushes us on? Its absurd but we have to move. I guess that’s what the book was saying.
Ever artist has their studio hardships. How does this residency break your love/hate relationship with your studio in Knob Hill?
I love space. It is always good to switch up the feng shui.
What would you consider to be the perfect studio experience?
A perfect studio? Some sun, modern conveniences, a lot of space, for a little bit of money, near food, near some good people, and it pays for itself.
What is the highlight of your experience working in Ever Gold Gallery?
It’s a great atmosphere, and I got time and space to make art. Thanks for the opportunity which was a pleasure in itself.
Owen Takabayashi: Artist in Residence
Thursday, Sep/1/2011 - Friday, Sep/23/2011| Category: Art Gallery Exhibits | Ever Gold Gallery is pleased to announce the second edition of their biyearly residency program. Designed to give emerging artists a space to express their vision, the three-week residency and subsequent exhibition generates a new body of work specific to each individual artist's encounter with the site. San Francisco-based Japanese American artist, Owen Takabayashi, has previously had two solo exhibitions in Ever Gold's project space. For Takabayashi’s new body of work and site-specific installation he will be appropriating the utility of found, mass-produced objects.
Through semiological deconstruction Takabayashi's investigations into themes of departure and spirituality will, during the exhibition, take on sculptural and flat forms. His Japanese roots mixed with his experience of American culture has caused him to recontextualize contemporary spirituality and in doing so question the importance of cultural devices fabricated and implemented by those misguiding current culture.
With conceptual nodes to Joseph Beauys’ 1974 performance, "I like America and America Likes Me”, which recontextualized man and America's global roll, Takabayashi will create a new interaction with the elements of local vs. global by “living” with this discarded junk, thus making it sustained and localized. Through his process, Takabayashi also places himself in the area between art and craftsmanship where the objects not only take on new meanings but new physical functions as well; a proletarian form of Assemblage.

Wendell McShine (lives in Mexico City, from Trinidad) opened his newest show, Raccoon's Law, at Fifty24SF on Saturday night. ARYZ was a tough act to follow, but McShine held his own in the space... With a combination of a mural, a video, and both drawings and mixed-media works on paper, the diversity of this solo show was impressive. The Raccoon drawings were especially attractive as the way he executed them looked like they actually had fur coming off the page, and you can only imagine how soft it would be to touch. I was lucky to see his work in person through this show, and I hope to encounter more in the future.

I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. It was just too much to take in, too much to process. So, I did what comes naturally and took images. It sort of helped me separate from the chaos and helped me focus.

Well, it looks like John Felix Arnold rocked Tokyo with his opening with Koutaro Ooyama at Spes Lab a few weeks back. Even a language barrier couldn't prevent the success of their collaboration. They invited everyone they met on trains, in cars, cafes, bars, restaurants, and people responded by attending, and bringing their families and friends as well.

| Sanjay & Craig Premiere Party (+LA)
Last Thursday evening, I was lucky enough to get invited to Nickelodeon's premiere party for their newest cartoon, Sanja & Craig, created by three awesome dudes - Andreas Trolf, Jim Dirschberger, and Jay Howell. Hosted at Tony's Salon with pizza provided by Pizzanistas, the premiere party was filled with libations and celebrations, even a break-dance battle broke out. Congrats to everyone who worked on the show, and especially Trolf, Jim, and Jay who all have been working tirelessly on it. Sanja & Craig premiered Saturday 10:30 am 11 am on Nickelodeon. You can watch Sanjay and Craig Episode 1: Brett Venom on hulu. and read about how the guys came up with it in this interview with The LA Times. Now, here's some photos from the premiere.

Did Corey actually shoot the photo? Who knows and Corey is fishing for salmon right now (like this), so we can't ask him to find out.
Wait, on this Instagram, Corey Arnold writes "Ripped off!", so we guess that's your answer.

Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.

Oakland: Organizers Trying to Keep Monthly Street Art Party Alive

OAKLAND -- First Fridays is hoping Oakland hasn't seen the last of the one of a kind event... The street art party is free to attend, but organizers say with police and other costs the price tag to throw the monthly party is $20,000... The City of Oakland has been footing the bill for months and after kicking in $500,000, it's pulling the plug... Organizers are now asking for donations and developing a vendor fee schedule to try and keep the party alive. ~continue reading

Disputed Banksy graffiti art sold for $1.1M in London

Wonder if our old emails with Banksy are worth a few thousand dollars. It seems everything the dude touches is worth a million dollars these days! Nutty and much deserved.
A disputed Banksy graffiti artwork removed from a gritty London neighbourhood has sold for approximately $1.1 million US at auction. The provocative Slave Labour (Bunting Boy) sold at a private auction held by concierge firm The Sincura Group at the London Film Museum on Sunday, according to Bloomberg news service. The spray-painted, stenciled work depicts a child labourer using an antique sewing machine to create a Union Jack bunting.
